The Tibetan guru spoke at a political event hosted by former president Vicente Fox, who is an avid supporter of the legalization of marijuana and has been a vital exponent in the vast debate in regards to whether North America’s largest city should pass legislation to decriminalize and regulate marijuana consumption in the Mexican capital.

Surprisingly, though, while the Dalai Lama did in fact praise the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes, the Mongolian mentor disappointingly announced that smoking marijuana for its pharmaceutical advantages should be the “only exception,” and that partaking in the herb to alter the senses of the mind should be considered an unacceptable practice.

“But otherwise if it’s just an issue of somebody (using the drug to have) a crazy mind, that’s not good,” said His High Holiness when questioned about his stance on marijuana legalization during an outdoor conference held ex-president’s Fox Center in the central state of Guanajuato.

Well, we have to admit to being somewhat shocked to learn that someone as enlightened and spiritually endowed as the Dalia Lama doesn’t make it a part of his daily ritual to sit perched atop the north-east peaks of the Himalaya mountains while chiefing it up on a Buddha Belly Bazooka.

It is reassuring, however, that his illuminated devotion to a religion with traditional principles rooted in obtaining and maintaining freedom from mental obstruction, is wise enough to understand the substantial benefits smoking weed can have for humankind on a medicinal level.
